John Lennox, a man who has debated some of the world's most renowned atheists, held the Easter convention audience in awe as he spoke from the Katoomba platform.
John's expositions unfolded the Joseph story and richly applied it to everyday life - in the areas of parenting and family, in our understanding of work and its importance to God and in personal relationships and forgiveness. On Sunday night, after the normal evening session, John gave a bonus lecture (with Q&A) based on material from his book, "God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God?"
1500 people stayed until 10pm to listen to his lecture and Q&A session on science vs. God - and many remarked they gladly would have stayed at least another hour.
'What was most encouraging', said convention chair Jonathan Dykes, 'was the way we saw God work throughout the whole weekend. It was obvious at the end of the first day, after sermons from each of the speakers that something special was happening. Every now and again through kcc's history, God has done this. He works by His Word and Spirit in a way that is particularly unmistakable. The way 2000 people so gladly sat, often in pin-drop silence, and listened to God's Word preached was very encouraging. People formed long queues to speak with John after he'd preached; parents approached him in tears, saying that he had changed their sons/daughters lives.'
The weekend highlighted that there is a great hunger on the part of Christians to get answers to the questions that the world is asking … because many Christians (and their children) are asking these questions themselves!
Mark Fitzmaurice of Macquarie Baptist Church was one of the thousands who were struck by John's preaching. 'He explains explained Genesis in such a way that where some see a lot of problems in the text, we can instead find an abundance of fresh and satisfying answers.'
Keris Hobbs of Summer Hill Church was another who was highly encouraged by John's exposition. 'He did a great job of explaining how the people and events of Genesis foreshadow what's coming and the fulfilment of God's promises to his people through Jesus. I loved how he brought some of the characters to life and consistently showed God's sovereignty and control over all situations. kec was a great time being challenged from God's word.'
John Lennox spoke from Genesis 37-50, the story of Joseph. He chose this because the theme of the weekend was 'Living Proof' - exploring how Christians are to live in a world where they don't belong, and in a world that watches their every move.
